The original purpose of jeweling a rifle bolt was a way for the retention of extra oil on moving parts resulting in smoother operation. Not only was there a purpose behind the practice these was also the cosmetic reasoning behind process because when done properly there is a very appealing appearance when the rifle is reassembled.
